As digital technologies continue to revolutionize industries, education must also evolve to prepare leaders for the challenges ahead. The Executive Master in Digital Transformation, part of ESSEC Online’s diverse portfolio of 100% Online Executive Programs, is designed to equip professionals with the skills and insights needed for this rapidly changing landscape. Recently, the program welcomed a new Academic Director, whose deep experience in both academia and digital innovation will shape its future. In this interview, he shares his journey, his vision for the program, and the expertise he brings to the role.

The new Academic Director’s fascination with digital technologies began in the early 90s, long before the term "digital transformation" became a business buzzword. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been captivated by the potential of digital technologies” he recalls. This early passion led him to pursue a degree in management at the University of Mannheim, followed by a PhD in Information Systems, where he explored the intersection of management and technology.

His journey at ESSEC Business School began with an innovative approach to teaching. “I started incorporating digital tools into my classes, beginning with live quizzes to boost engagement. Eventually, I moved on to more advanced methods, like using pre-recorded content to allow for more interactive and dynamic in-class sessions” he explains.

One of his standout achievements was co-designing the fully online course “Introduction to AI for Business” alongside his colleague Professor Jeroen Rombouts. Starting with just 100 participants, the course quickly grew to over 2,000 annually, demonstrating his commitment to innovative digital pedagogy. “I think we’ve learned a lot along the way” he reflects on his experience, “and now, as the Academic Director of the Executive Master in Digital Transformation, I’m eager to apply those lessons to further enrich the program.”

When asked about his vision for the Executive Master in Digital Transformation (EMDT), the new director emphasizes the importance of first understanding the perspectives of his team, the students, and the program itself. “Before articulating a grand vision, I believe it’s crucial to gain a deeper understanding of the program’s intricacies” he notes. He is quick to acknowledge the strength of the existing team, and his aim is to build upon the program’s existing success.

“My hope is that, with this strong team, we can further strengthen and expand our position in the market. Digital transformation is a fast-evolving field, and staying ahead requires constant innovation and adaptation” he explains.

As an Information Systems (IS) researcher, the new director brings a wealth of knowledge at the intersection of management and technology—the precise focus of the Executive Master of the Executive Master in Digital Transformation. His research has focused on understanding current technological trends and the business challenges they create. “Our program is all about digital transformation, and I think my background will help us stay ahead of the curve, as much as possible in this fast-changing environment.”

One of his key research areas  involves how companies manage their relationships with external IT service providers, such as Microsoft, Salesforce, and SAP. “These firms supply critical technologies for digital transformation, so understanding how to manage these partnerships effectively is crucial” he says.

He has also delved deeply into the topic of digital platforms, which often form the backbone of transformation initiatives. “I’m particularly interested in how companies manage the trade-offs between control and autonomy, or standardization versus variety, which are common challenges when implementing digital platforms” he adds.

In addition to his technical expertise, the new director is passionate about digital pedagogy and enhancing learning through technology. “I’m really excited to apply my experience in digital teaching to this program, ensuring that our methods are not only innovative but also effective in delivering the knowledge and skills our participants need” he says.

With a background deeply rooted in digital innovation, a passion for teaching, and a clear vision for the future, the new Academic Director Thomas HUBER is set to lead the Executive Master in Digital Transformation, part of ESSEC Online’s broad variety of executive programs, to new heights. His focus on collaboration, continuous improvement, and cutting-edge research will undoubtedly enrich the learning experience for all participants, preparing them to thrive in a world where digital transformation is no longer an option, but a necessity.
