Real Estate and Sustainable Development Chair

Real Estate and Sustainable Development Chair

The Chair for Real Estate and Sustainable Development was established in 2003 to promote teaching and research in real estate economics, finance and management in line with current sustainable development issues. It responds to a real estate context that has undergone profound changes in recent years, due to the emergence of new players, the consequences of the pandemic and the globalization of real estate markets (office buildings, shopping malls, logistics, hotels and business centers). ESSEC is currently the only major business school in France to have created such a center of expertise in real estate management, economics and finance for undergraduate students.

In order to achieve the climate objectives set by the Paris Agreement, it is essential to focus on real estate and its decarbonization process. That is why the Chair chose to focus on the sustainable development dimension from the moment it was founded. The acceleration of natural and climatic upheavals is raising economic, ecological, political, social and health challenges for society as a whole. Real estate is undergoing a rapid transformation due to the urgency of its impact on the environment, and so too must the way we teach it. The challenge that the Real Estate and Sustainable Development Chair has set for itself is this: to train future generations by drawing lessons from the past.

“Real estate holds a unique place in our lives. For many people, owning their primary residence is a ‘life goal’. Real estate is also an asset that is an integral part of many other aspects of our lives (schooling, work, shopping, medical care, etc.). Similarly, real estate has become a financial asset class with undeniable benefits for investors.

Lastly, it lies at the heart of contemporary environmental concerns. The sector, which operates in the interplay of these many aspects, is undergoing a profound transformation and must be exemplary in terms of socially responsible investment and CSR policies. The commitments made by all players are extremely strong and show the way to future generations. By committing to real estate, we are certainly preparing a better world for our planet."
