Philanthropy Chair

Philanthropy Chair

ESSEC Business School's Philanthropy Chair is a research Chair whose mission is to better understand philanthropy and improve its impact. The Chair defines philanthropy as all donations made by private donors to serve the public interest.

Created in January 2011 at ESSEC Business School, it answers a growing need to address the issues of the philanthropic phenomenon, which is constantly growing and becoming increasingly international.

Since its creation, the Philanthropy Chair has demonstrated its ability to publish high quality academic and applied research, to actively participate in the development of a European research network on philanthropy, to disseminate new knowledge to practitioners and to train ESSEC Business School students and professionals in philanthropy.

The Chair's 10th anniversary video:

"ESSEC is the only business school in France and one of the few in the world to have a Chair on the subject of philanthropy!

For more than 10 years, we have been producing and disseminating innovative knowledge on donations, sponsorship, foundations, fundraising and all the hybrid practices that are renewing the ways of financially supporting causes of public interest. With its close ties to professionals in the sector, the Chair has become a key player in the field and aims to further increase its academic and social impact over the next 10 years."

  • Lunch & Learn seminars: These free online seminars, which require registration, bring together two speakers each quarter, one academic and one practitioner. They address, from complementary angles, the same problem encountered by philanthropy's key players. Designed as a series of meetings, their main objective is to allow current and future professionals in the philanthropic sector to take a step back from their practices and share their thoughts on certain strategic subjects, informed by research findings.
The European and international dimension is a particular focus

  • About the conferences: Once a year, the Philanthropy Chair invites you to a conference during which an international researcher specializing in philanthropy presents a recently published book or their latest research. An evening event usually followed by an informal cocktail party

  • Podcasts: every last Wednesday of the month, the Philanthropy Chair broadcasts a new episode of its podcast "Philanthropy in question(s)", in which it summarizes and presents the main ideas of a research article

  • Newsletter: twice a year, the Philanthropy Chair reports on the highlights of the semester via its newsletter. By signing up, you will also receive invitations to our events, new podcast episodes and other timely news.

  • The class "Philanthropy: Strategies and Impact" : is open to ESSEC Business School's MiM students in both French and English, taught since 2015 by Arthur Gautier (voted favorite professor by students and winner of the ESSEC Foundation's Pedagogical Excellence Award).
